Society of Illustrators/New York

Philadelphia Sketch Club Illustrators
This exhibition will feature some of America’s greatest illustrators who were members of the Philadelphia Sketch Club. Noted past illustrator members included A. B. Frost, N. C. Wyeth, Henry C. Pitz, Earl Horter and John Falter.

Kindred Spirits: Woodmere and the Philadelphia Sketch Club
Woodmere Art Museum and the Philadelphia Sketch Club have always had an intimate relationship with local artists. As a tribute to the Philadelphia Sketch Club's 150th anniversary and to the positive difference it has made to the cultural life of Philadelphia, Woodmere has reached into its treasure trove of art and selected a rich sampling of works produced by members of the Sketch Club. In many cases, the featured artists played important roles in the life of both institutions.

Inspiring a Nation
An exhibition of World War I posters by Philadelphia Sketch Club artists presented by the Army Heritage Center. Seldom have artists’ works stirred human emotions more than these posters. They inspired our citizens to enlist, donate funds and work in the industrial complex to support the war effort. The exhibition will be held in Posterity Hall.

The Markeim Arts Center celebrates the Philadelphia Sketch Club's 150 years of achievement. Exhibition in the Center's newly renovated facility will feature works by Southern New Jersey members of the Philadelphia Sketch Club.

N. C. Wyeth and the Philadelphia Sketch Club
In 1912, the Philadelphia Sketch Club was the venue for the first exhibition devoted solely to N. C. Wyeth’s work. This recreation of that exhibition includes both illustrative art and Brandywine valley landscapes in a variety of impressionistic styles.

The Art Gene: The Hutton Family Legacy
Hugh Hutton was an editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Inquirer for over 35 years. His wife, daughter and other family members were or are accomplished artists and their works will be presented in this exhibition. Three generations of the family have been actively involved as members of the Philadelphia Sketch Club.

Eakins on Paper
This special installation of rarely-seen drawings and watercolors will highlight the draftsmanship of Thomas Eakins, who began his teaching career at the Sketch Club. A tour of the museum will also uncover additional works by Eakins and other noted Sketch Club members such as Howard Roberts and Thomas Moran.

The Architect as Artist: Theophilus P. Chandler, Jr. (1845-1928)
This exhibition in the Athenaeum’s Haas Gallery will feature more than one hundred drawings, photos and manuscripts from the Chandler collection at the Athenaeum. Chandler helped found the School of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and his membership at the Philadelphia Sketch Club spanned over 50 years.

Ye Great Mogul of the Sketch Club: The Philadelphia Sketch Club and the art of William Emlen Cresson
This exhibition of William Cresson's sketchbooks and paintings highlights the PAFA sutdent and Sketch Club member whose tragic death thwarted his artistic promise as both a painter of literary scenes and humorous caricatures.

PHILADELPHIA SKETCH CLUB

Fred Wagner (1860-1940)
Fred Wagner was one of the most well liked and prolific Sketch Club members. His reputation as an artist of importance continues to grow, and two of his relatives, Susan Smith and Cyndy Drue Smith, have published a book on his life and work. The exhibition will feature a number of Wagner's work as well as information on the artist.

Ever-Changing Philadelphia:  Prints and Watercolors by Frank H. Taylor
One of the most prolific viewmakers in the Philadelphia area was Frank Hamilton Taylor (1846-1927), an artist, author, and editor who found a wide range of means to put his work before the public. An early member and leader of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, he was especially interested in the 18th century city and its peripheries, making hundreds of watercolors between the 1890s and 1920s. He published many of these in a series of over 400 large lithographed prints under the title Old Philadelphia: Artistic Reproductions from Drawings by Frank H. Taylor..

A bus trip to New York on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 to view the collaborative exhibition at the Society of Illustrators, visit Illustration House, and the Salmagundi Club where several members have belonged.

A bus trip on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 to the Smithsonian Institution where we will have a behind the scenes viewing of works by Sketch Club members Thomas Moran, Stephen Ferris and H. Lyman Sayen.

WALKING TOUR OF CITY HALL AND THE MASONIC TEMPLE
A guided tour of the art in City Hall and the Masonic Temple to view works of art by Sketch Club members.

GALA ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
An anniversary celebration will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Joseph Pennell medals will be presented by the Club to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the visual arts.
